Sidney Lumet: I've always lost the Oscar to crap

The director's, 85, phenomenal output ranges from the classic courtroom drama 12 Angry Men in 1957 starring Henry Fonda to Network to Dog Day Afternoon to Equus to The Wiz. In spite of his renown, he’s never won an Academy Award

He's been nominated five times for an Oscar. In 2005 he received what New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis aptly called the “consolation prize for a lifetime of neglect”—an honorary Academy Award.

“Does it still rankle not to have won an Oscar?”

“Sure, and anyone who says it doesn’t matter is talking bullshit. Of course it matters! First of all, the difference between winning and losing can be $3 or $4 million on your next fee. So let’s start with that. And maybe this is a very subjective reaction, but it seems to me that I’ve always lost to crap.”
