Claire Danes on patriotism, psychology and parenthood

Claire Danes stars as the bipolar CIA agent Carrie Mathison in Homeland. Her furious vigilance is hard to distinguish from pathological mania. "There are very few opportunities to play characters that are this rich, this active. It's a filet mignon of a role."

Claire Danes: "Psychology and acting are very closely linked. It's just about studying people and how they work. It can be an incredible discipline and exercise. I haven't been in a while – I haven't really needed to – but I'm glad it's there if I ever do."

She first went to therapy when she was six. A fact which, she protests, has been overstated. "I had these imaginary friends who followed me around and made me do things," she says dismissively. "I don't know – I was a little OCD. But it's not that relevant, not that big a deal."
