Harper Seven Beckham and other names that rocked celebrity gossip columns

Well, they were hardly going to call their first daughter Rebecca, were they? David and Victoria Beckham have hit the latest celeb news headlines this week after choosing a typically unusual name for their new baby, Harper Seven.

A whole range of theories about the moniker have circulated since the happy couple welcomed the 7lb 10oz tot into the world – some more serious than others. According to The Sun, she’s named after a Disney character her older brothers are fond of, Harper Finkle from the Wizards of Waverly Place. Meanwhile, Twitter users have suggested that David and Victoria have resurrected their old method of naming their child after where she was conceived – in this case, Mancunian district Harpurhey, once named the most deprived neighbourhood in England in a government study. Of course, it isn’t too hard to figure out where ‘Seven’ came from, given it was David’s number on the football field for much of his career.

Whatever the real reason for Harper’s bizarre name, we have to admit that we quite like it. Well, certainly more than any of these other frankly bonkers baby names…

Apple Martin
Given that her dad’s the singer in Coldplay and her actress mum favours safe Hollywood rom-coms, it’s hardly surprising that Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter was named after a sweet, but ultimately bland, piece of fruit. It’s a newspaper editor’s dream for punning headlines – but a nightmare in terms of the playground taunts its sure to attract.

Moon Unit Zappa
By the same token, madcap musician Frank Zappa was unlikely to choose anything resembling normal when his daughter was born in 1967. However, she didn’t seem to resent her dad for the beyond weird moniker – she performed on his 1982 track Valley Girl at the age of 14.

Zowie Bowie

Top marks to music legend David Bowie for not only finding a word that rhymed with his (made-up) surname – but in the process confirming how it’s supposed to be pronounced. However, Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones – to give him his full name – has been less sure of which name suits him best than Moon Unit. He’s been variously known as Zowie, Joey and Joe down the years, before finally settling on plain old Duncan and making a splash in the movie world as a director.

Any of Bob Geldof’s children
The king of odd baby names must be the Boomtown Rats singer and Live Aid organiser, who is father to Peaches, Pixie and Fifi Trixibelle. Thankfully, the first two at least deserve their daft names for their eternally irritating behaviour, splashed across the celebrity gossip columns for all to see on a seemingly daily basis.
