Tom Hooper on Les Misérables: some songs took 21 takes
Adapting one of the most popular, longest running stage musicals of all time for screen was always going to be a gamble. But director tom Hooper took even more of a risk by having the actors sing live on set and having barely any spoken dialogue.
The actors were intent on getting the songs absolutely right: “I remember Eddie Redmayne did 21 takes of Empty Chairs and we used take 21. I was happy with take 12 but he said, 'look I have waited for a year, just let me just do it'.”
