NY Musical Festival - BEDBUGS!!!

Oscar E Moore from the rear mezzanine for Talk Entertainment.com

A most unlikely combination of 80’s B sci-fi horror-movies, iconic rock music, a no holds barred, delicious take off on Canadian diva Celine Dion and bedbugs – giant six foot bedbugs (some of whom are gay – hey, its 2012 in NYC) has resulted in an outrageously entertaining and inventive new kind of musical – where magnificent voices abound and that has audiences cheering.

“Bug Lady” Carly, a sensational Celina Carvajal, is an exterminator who is determined to rid the world of the blood sucking buggers. After all, they were responsible for her mother’s freakish death. But her insecticide solution only causes them to mutate into giants that threaten to take over the world. Burt (a vibrant Ryan Bogner) her assistant, who has his own untested formula, falls in love with one of the bedbug’s victims - Chad (a droll Stephen Sheffer). They make a lovely couple. Cimex, an incredible Chris Hall is head bedbug – looking very much like some Rocky Horror rock star of the eighties – carrying on full throttle.

If this is not crazy enough, Dionne Salon arrives for her concert. Brian Charles Rooney is fearless and absolutely fantastic in this role of a Diva who has to contend with her pushy manager/husband, who munches on chips and burgers when feeling blue and who sings her heart out to save the world. It’s a performance that should make him famous – or at the very least infamous. His vocal range is incredible and he has just the right satirical edge to his delivery. Gesturing. Climaxing. Whispering. He also plays a very funny maid – Consuela. Wig and costume changes alone would warrant an award of some kind.

Wonderfully outrageous costumes (Amanda Bujak/Chris Rumery) are as wonderfully outrageous as the plot (Book by Fred Sauter) which is a slim excuse to have the many crazy characters carry on in all seriousness while we get to hear one musical number after another by Paul Leschen (who does a great turn at the keyboard as well) and Fred Sauter that continue to top each other and amaze. The choreography by Robin Carrigan and direction by Samuel Buggeln add immensely to the overall tone of Bedbugs!!!

In an assortment of roles H. Wayne Williams is outstanding, especially as Dexter Diabolique and Menachem. Mark Fisher makes a great newscaster and Tracey Gilbert is great as Carly’s mom and the frustrated owner of a diner where Carly and Dionne, the dueling divas, have it out. Don’t ask! Just go!
